Trigonometry is one of the most important concepts you’ll learn in Class 10 CBSE Maths. It teaches how angles and sides of a right triangle relate to each other. This chapter forms the base for Class 11, Class 12, and even science and engineering courses.
🔍 What is Trigonometry?
Trigonometry is the study of triangles — more specifically, the relationships between the angles and sides of right-angled triangles. It’s introduced in Chapter 8 of the Class 10 NCERT Maths book.
The word “Trigonometry” comes from Greek:
-
“Tri” = Three
-
“Gono” = Sides
-
“Metron” = Measure
So, it literally means measuring triangles.
🔺 Understanding the Triangle Setup
Before diving into formulas, understand these 3 sides of a right-angled triangle:
-
Hypotenuse: The longest side, always opposite the right angle
-
Perpendicular: The side opposite to the angle in question
-
Base (Adjacent): The side next to the angle (excluding the hypotenuse)
These definitions help you understand which trigonometric ratio to use.
✏️ Trigonometric Ratios (The Core of Chapter 8)
These are formulas that show how the sides relate to each other depending on the angle:
| Trigonometric Ratio | Formula |
|---|---|
| sin θ | Perpendicular / Hypotenuse |
| cos θ | Base / Hypotenuse |
| tan θ | Perpendicular / Base |
| cosec θ | 1 / sin θ |
| sec θ | 1 / cos θ |
| cot θ | 1 / tan θ |
These ratios apply only in right-angled triangles.
🎯 Real-Life Applications of Trigonometry
You might wonder: why learn this?
Here’s where Trigonometry is used in real life:
-
Measuring height of buildings and mountains
-
Engineering and architecture designs
-
Navigation systems like GPS
-
Physics and astronomy calculations
🧠 Tips to Master This Chapter
-
Visualize the triangle always before applying any formula
-
Label sides clearly based on the angle you’re dealing with
-
Make a quick reference chart of all ratios
-
Practice NCERT examples and previous year board questions
